Found these long lost treasures somewhere in southwest Ohio. Have a great Memorial Day weekend everybody!
A Museum for Over-the-Rhine
I am not certain how it suddenly became the middle of September…. oh boy. At the end of August my students presented their final projects during Final Friday at a gallery space in Over-the-Rhine. They were asked to design a museum that captures the rich history of OTR. Each student had their own unique approach to organizing the historical information and presenting it in a captivating 3-dimensional experience. I was incredibly pleased with the work— it showed a great passion and compassion for the neighborhood. These photographs, taken by Cameron Dunn, beautifully capture the day.

Prohibition Resistance
The studio took a tour through Over the Rhine’s Historic Brewery District this afternoon. Many thanks to Steve Hampton, Executive Director of The Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation, for his vast knowledge and time spent with us. It is both amazing and sad to see what remains of these buildings, and fascinating to know that underground tunnels are still being discovered. If you are interested in prohibition resistance, connect with the OTR Brewery District to schedule a tour.

Wielert’s Visited
The University of Cincinnati kicked off Summer quarter on Monday. Third and Fourth year Interior Design and Architecture students in my studio will be designing a museum for Over the Rhine using the old Wielert’s building on Vine Street as their site. It was in worse shape than they were expecting, but everyone championed through a site survey today.

Boy Scout Handbook
This was a pretty good find. The artwork on the cover of this handbook is by Norman Rockwell. We love that the book text is printed in hunter green. The diagrams are quite detailed. It is worth noting that in order for a scout to obtain a merit badge for cooking, he must Prove his ability to build a fireplace out of stone or sod or logs; build a fire in the fireplace, and cook the following dishes: camp stew, two vegetables, omelet and rice pudding.

YES Matt W. Moore
Check out this mural on Clay Street behind YES Gallery. Matt W. Moore did a one month residency at the gallery and created works that are spray paint on canvas as well as this gem. There is a cute little park across from the mural if you want to make a lunch of it.

I Love My Smith Corona
First Aid
We have amassed a small stack of old handbooks over the past year. I love how they smell like my Grandparent’s old farm house and have lovely little hand drawn diagrams. This one was created by The American National Red Cross and published in 1957.

Found
Antique drafting table. Unfortunately it doesn’t fit in our current studio space. However, thanks to some tight locking hardware and a level, for now it is a very nice dining table.

My Valentine
We are adding a little hand crafted leather goodness to LINE + PAPER with this NYC hand made i-phone backer by Jamie Clawson. Valentine Goods are removable leather backs custom made to fit your iphone 4. They offer a variety of backs that vary in color, texture, and finish. My phone is currently wearing the Pecan skin. I love how it sounds when I set the phone down; it is a far more elegant thud. I am also excited to see how it patinas over time. You can order yours here

Playing hookey in Kentucky
It has been a mad sprint since we landed back in Cincinnati, so we decided to escape the studio yesterday for a day of drinking and gambling. The rain even decided to peel away for a few hours which was considerate. Our dear friend and very knowledgeable beer man, Adam Bankovich lead the charge. On our way down to the horse races at Keeneland, we stopped at the Lexington Brewing Company for a tour and sampling. We must be honest and say that it is unfortunate that the branding for this beer does not live up to the brewery’s unbelievably rich heritage. However, they do make a tasty Bourbon Barrel Ale. While they have yet to name it, our favorite of the tastings was a thick coffee-molasses-kahlua sort of liquor served hot with cream on top. Yes.

Vanishing Cincinnati
We unfortunately just missed seeing this in person, but are happy to have found the drawings online. Vanishing Cincinnati was an exhibit at the Betts House featuring over twenty pen and ink and drawings by Barbara and David Day that depict Cincinnati’s urban landscape from 1850 to 1950. We love the delicateness of the renderings and their soft color palettes. They are working on creating a book with over 60 illustrations of Cincinnati that are accompanied by brief histories. You can view all of their prints here.

Rollin’ in my 5-6
By now you probably have heard the news that MadMen will not be returning until 2012. For now you can enjoy some more vintage advertisements from that era to hold you over until Season 5 begins. I am really impressed by the rendering quality on this car, especially the way the artist captured reflections on all the chrome accents. This two-point perspective captures a family taking a pleasant sunday drive in the middle of nowhere. Keep in mind; this was before our present day commercials, where you see luxury cars doing donuts in the desert and trucks pulling boulders through a gauntlet of fire and flying steel. The 1950s where definitely a simpler time.

New York… you will be missed
It’s a pretty classic story: two years ago we packed up a truck and moved to New York. We experienced as many restaurants, bars, shops, museums, shows and places of curiosity as we could. We fell in love— you know, the good stuff. We expanded our knowledge of our craft while working with some truly talented and creative people. Rebekah even finally learned Photoshop thanks to the patient tutelage of Adam Davidson and Sabrina Iorio. This weekend we packed up a truck again and made the return move to Cincinnati. It was bittersweet— sad to leave our friends in New York, but excited to see our friends in Cincinnati again. We are living in Over the Rhine, a historic area of downtown Cincinnati that is seeing an amazing revitalization. There are still a few boxes to unpack, but our studio is up and running and we are excited to be back to the drawing boards.
